Most states or local jurisdictions have adopted some version of either Standard 90.
ASHRAE 90.1 STANDARD CODE
I ran the numbers and the results are impressive.ĪSHRAE Standard 90.1-2016 improves both source and site energy use efficiency by over 40 percent compared to the 1989 edition of the standard. American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1: Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) are the major energy design standards for new buildings in the United States. However, I was curious to see how the incremental energy efficiency improvements compounded over time.

For instance, the DOE has determined that buildings built to Standard 90.1–2013, as compared with buildings built to Standard 90.1–2010, would result in national source energy savings of approximately 8.5 percent and site energy savings of approximately 7.6 percent of commercial building energy consumption.

You may not be initially impressed by the incremental improvements from one edition of Standard 90.1 to the next. The DOE also estimates energy use intensity (EUI) in their comparative analyses. Though, it appears that the DOE has begun to assess relative energy cost savings, starting with the 2016 edition. As buildings consume approximately 40% of the primary energy in the United States, the standard is an indispensable reference for engineers and other professionals involved in the design of buildings and building systems.ĪSHRAE is an international technical society that fulfills its mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing, and continuing education. Each subsequent DOE determination compares the current edition of Standard 90.1 to the most recent previous edition in terms of energy efficiency improvements related to both source energy and site energy. Since being developed in response to the energy crisis in the 1970s, Standard 90.1 has become the basis for building codes and is the standard for building design and construction throughout the United States. We appreciate the support of the Department of Energy in reaching a wider audience and extending access to our flagship energy conservation standard.”

“Standard 90.1-2007 is widely used throughout the design community, and the download version makes it available to users at their own computers for ready and easy access,” ASHRAE President Lynn G. ASHRAE 90.1 has been a benchmark for commercial building energy codes in the United States and a key basis for codes and standards around the world for over 35 years. Navigators cover ASHRAE 90.1-2004, 2007, 2010, 20 for the Appendix G (Performance Rating Method) or ECB Method (Energy Cost Budget). The data used in Standard 90.1 is published in ASHRAE Standard 169 (ASHRAE, 2013), which is based on a research project completed in 2009 (Thevenard, 2009). On the other hand, ASHRAE 90.1 presents the methodology related to climate data in Annex 1 of the standard.

Through a funding contract with the Department of Energy, copies of the I-P edition of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2007, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, are being offered as a free downloadable PDF as of October 22, 2010. This work was presented to ASHRAE during the 2003 Chicago Winter Meeting. In order to move the industry forward toward more energy efficient design, ASHRAE is making it easier for facility professionals to access the flagship energy standard, 90.1, which is now available as a free download for a limited time.
